A Guide for LDS Missionaries:

What to Expect in Your Travel Medicine Consultation

Getting your mission call is one of the most exciting moments of your life. Along with spiritual and emotional preparation, there are important physical steps to take—especially if you’ve been called to serve internationally.

One of those steps is your travel medicine consultation. This is where you’ll get the vaccines, medications, and medical advice you need to stay safe and healthy in your assigned country. And the best part? You can do it all from home through a virtual appointment.

Whether you’re a missionary or a parent helping your son or daughter get ready, here’s what you can expect from your online travel medicine consultation.

1. Before the Appointment: What to Prepare

To make the most of your consultation, gather the following ahead of time:

  • Submit your intake forms. This is absolutely crucial to your visit as the physician needs to take time to tailor the consultation to your specific history, needs, and mission call.
  • Bring your drivers license as it may be needed to verify your identity.
Your immunization records (especially childhood vaccines, tetanus shots, and any previous travel vaccines)
  • List of any medications you currently take

Having these ready helps the provider tailor your care to your destination, medical history, and mission needs.

2. What Happens During the Virtual Visit

Your travel medicine appointment usually lasts 20–30 minutes. Here’s what it includes:

  • Health and Travel Review: The provider will ask about your health history and where you’re going.
  • Vaccine Recommendations: Based on your mission location, you’ll receive a personalized vaccine plan (e.g., typhoid, yellow fever, hepatitis A, etc.).
  • Medication Prescriptions: You may receive prescriptions for malaria prevention, altitude sickness, or traveler’s diarrhea—depending on your area.
  • Health & Safety Tips: You’ll get advice on food safety, hydration, bug protection, and other everyday precautions.

This is also a great time to ask questions—about side effects, timing, or how to pack meds for travel.

3. After the Visit: What Comes Next

After your consultation, you’ll receive:

  • A country-specific health guide outlining specific precautions and endemic diseases.
  • A written medication guide for any prescriptions issued.
  • Prescriptions sent to your door for easy packing in your mission luggage.

If you still need to get certain shots, we can help direct you to a nearby clinic or county health department.

Tips for a Smooth Visit

  • Be on time and find a quiet space with good internet.
  • Bring a parent if you want help taking notes or asking questions.
